Oxyopes rubicundus? Red Lynx Spider

Face on


Lynx spider, around 4mm, in a garden in The Gap, Brisbane with strong dark markings on the sides of the abdomen, a habit of "stacking" its legs around its body more than other Lynx species. It may be Oxyopes rubicundus or a similar species. (O. rubicundus is recorded for NSW).

Side and back views

This side on and view from behind of specimen 3 show the blocky head (cephalothorax), the "stacked" legs and the dark markings on the abomen.

From above


Another specimen photographed 7 weeks later than the spider above. It seems to have a less blocky head, but still has the dark markings on the sides of the abdomen. It was somewhat larger, body length about 7mm. It was hunting On a Native Lime (Citrus australis).

Another specimen body length about 3mm, collected at the northern bank of the junction of Enoggera and Fish creeks, shaken off a Backhousia myrtifolia.
