US Navy at Lorward Ave.

At 8:00am we were preparing for the arrival of a Conservation Volunteers Australia team at Lorward Avenue Purtell Park. Also coming was an unknown 'Corporate Group' of possibly 30 more volunteers. At around 9:00am the team of international volunteers arrived in a minibus. We began organising the day's work. Then at around 9:30am an enormous bus arrived. We moved to meet the newcomers and were astonished to be greeted by 30 sailors of the US navy whose ship was in Brisbane.

Soon we were all at work and the US Navy was hard at it. Extending Scott and Annie's site was a piece of cake. By morning tea, despite a few casualties to friendly fire, including a Hovea, a Brown Kurrajong and some Hardenbergia, a good deal of this very difficult site had been wrestled to the ground.

After a break for photos we were back at it, and by lunchtime the site was prepped to a level beyond our wildest dreams. During lunch we had a chance to get to know our US Navy guests. They were a tight crew of around 35 people from many backgrounds, currently serving in Japan.

By no means did the US Navy outshine our international volunteers who were a rugged backbone to the day, staying with us until 3pm and achieving great things.
