MITURGIDAE Prowling Sac Spiders

Also called slender or long-legged sac spiders Miturgidae includes nearly 400 species in about 30 genera worldwide. Cheiracanthium was moved to Miturgidae from the family of "true" sac spiders, Clubionidae. Slender Sac spiders (Cheiracanthium species) have a slender body and long, thin legs spanning a 50 cent coin when adult. The fangs and fang-bearing chelicerae are long, extending forward almost like tusks, giving the spider a menacing appearance. Cheiracanthium hunts over shrubs and grasses during the day and will usually retreat if approached.
